    Hispanic

The CDC put out a report in 2005 giving statistics on diabetes type II in children. It stated that of all the children born after 2000, that 35% of all Caucasian children will get diabetes within their lifetime; 50% of all black children and 62% of all Latino girls will get diabetes in their lifetime.

    good luck with your report.

I’m not real positive, but I believe African Americans are at greater risk, in addition, AA men more so than women.
Use your search engine(google, yahoo, etc.) and do a search for diabetes.
Why did you wait until last minute to do your research?

All of the above answers are incorrect. They are referring to TYPE 2 diabetes, which is increasing along with obesity rates.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. It is uncommon, making up only 5-10% of diabetes cases. It is not related to lifestyle, and there is no known way to prevent it. It tends to first appear in childhood, although anyone from babies to seniors can develop it. Insulin injections are needed for survival.

Type 1 diabetes tends to appear mainly in those with Northern Europeam heritage. The reason for this is not totally clear, but seems to be due to specific genes (genotypes) that evolved in people from that particular area. Places with a record of Viking invasion also tend to have people with the genotypes found in Type 1 diabetes, and often, a higher than average rate of Type 1 diabetes.

In general, Scandinavians, Scottish, and the Irish tend to have higher rates of autoimmune Type 1 diabetes. Same with many Northern European countries. Finland has the highest rate of autoimmune Type 1 diabetes in the world. This is likely due to a combination of genetics AND environmental factors, like a lack of Vitamin D (sunshine) and a high intake of cow’s milk (has been linked to autoimmune Type 1 diabetes in some studies).

So what you need to know:

-Type 1 diabetes is considered to be an autoimmune disease. Finland has the highest rate of it in the world. It is usually found in those with at least some Northern European heritage.

-Autoimmune Type 1 diabetes is RARE in blacks, Asians, Indians, non-white Hispanics, etc without white ancestory.

-There is no known way to prevent autoimmune Type 1 diabetes, and it is NOT related to obesity, poor diet, or lack of exercise. Viruses have been linked to the development of the disease.

-Insulin is always needed for survival, and onset of the disease most often occurs in childhood or the teen years (although any age can develop it).

Good luck on your project and I hope you learned something! There is a lot of misinformation about Type 1 diabetes, as you can see from the above answers. I hope you go on to educate other people as well.
